Center for Ethics, University of Zurich

The Center for Military Medical Ethics (CMME) is located at the Center for Ethics of the University of Zurich. Thus, the CMME benefits from the perfect reserach environment offered by the Center for Ethics. At the same time, this integration also guarantees the academic independence and neutrality of the CMME.

The Center for Ethics is the first institution of its kind in Switzerland. At the University of Zurich it is responsible for conducting and coordinating ethics teaching and research.

The Center for Ethics at the University of Zurich is a multi-faculty initiative which is unique in Switzerland. The Chairs in Ethics within the Faculties of Theology, Philosophy and Medicine are at the heart of the Center, which was founded in 1995. They are organised within the Institute for Social Ethics (Faculty of Theology), the Ethics Research Institute (Faculty of Philosophy) and the Institute for Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine (Faculty of Medicine). More than 50 scientific members of staff are currently working in this environment, which boasts a good international network.

Swiss Centre of Competence for Military and Disaster Medicine (CC MDM)

The Centre of Competence for Military and Disaster Medicine (CC MDM) is affiliated to the Department of Defence, Swiss Armed Forces Logistics Organization, Medical Services. It is mandated by and under the direct responsibility of the Delegate of the Federal Council for Coordinated Medical Services CMS of the Swiss government (Beauftragter des Bundesrates für den Koordinierten Sanitätsdienst (KSD)).

The main tasks of the CC MDM are

  • Provision and coordination of the education of military medical personnel
  • Facilitation of research in military and disaster medicine

The CMME is directly funded by the CC MDM and is one of its external centers ("Fachzentrum").

ICMM Center of Reference for Education on IHL and Ethics

The ICMM Center of Reference for Education on IHL and Ethics is dedicated to educate military medical officers and officials in the International Humanitarian Law, Law of Armed Conflict and Military Medical Ethics. It organizes an annual Course of Reference on IHL, International Courses on the Law of Armed Conflict, a Course on Medical Ethics in Times of Armed Conflict, and Workshops on Military Medical Ethics.

It offers a neutral platform for open discussions and research among philosophers, lawyers and military medical doctors on questions of ethical leadership, analyses of military medical and legal dilemmas. It aims at contributing to the common search for solutions to medico-legal and medico-ethical dilemmas encountered by troops deployed in disaster situations, conflict, and war.
